The loss of the elastic tissue (elastin) in the skin with age causes the skin to hang loosely. This is caused by a flattening of the area where the epidermis and dermis (layer of skin under the epidermis) come together. Skin becomes more fragile and more easily bruised. This is due to thinner blood vessel walls.

Sensitive skin also refers to a range of conditions, from genetic ailments, such as rosacea and eczema, to severe allergies. While many people can have a skin reaction at some point or another to a product or ingredient, those with persistent issues are classified as having sensitive skin.
